Connect Gmail to Uplevel
Connect your Gmail account so email with your contacts shows up in the Uplevel Inbox and sends from your own address, and choose who can read it.

What it’s for
Connecting Gmail brings your email with contacts into Uplevel. Each conversation lands in the Inbox and on the contact's timeline, next to their texts and calls, and your replies go out from your own Gmail address, so they thread in Gmail too.
Uplevel only keeps mail with people who are your contacts. Newsletters, bills and personal mail stay in Gmail.
Before you start
- A Gmail or Google Workspace account. Outlook and Microsoft 365 mail can’t be connected.
- Your contacts in Uplevel, so their email has somewhere to land. Get started covers the import.
- Google turned on for the workspace. An owner or admin switches it on in Settings → Integrations.
Steps
Step 1: Open Integrations
Go to Settings → Integrations. The Google card at the top lists the accounts you have connected.
If the card says a workspace admin can turn on the Google integration, ask an owner or admin to switch it on. Turning it off later pauses everything Google powers and keeps the connected accounts.
You can also start from the Inbox. Until you connect an account it shows Bring your email into Uplevel with the same button.
Step 2: Choose what to connect
Choose Connect Google account. In the dialog:
- Leave Just me — a personal account selected. Shared accounts for a team or the whole workspace are for a Team Inbox mailbox, and only admins can add them.
- Tick Mail. Add Calendar and Tasks if you want those to sync too. Nothing is ticked for you, so Google only asks for what you choose.
- Decide whether to Share synced email with teammates. Off, teammates see that an exchange happened but not what it said. On, anyone who can see the contact can read the email. Email you send from Uplevel is always visible to them. You can change this later.
Step 3: Approve at Google
Choose Continue to Google, pick the account and approve the permissions you chose. Google sends you back to Integrations, where the account now shows Active.
Mail uses Google's
gmail.modifypermission. It lets Uplevel read, send and archive mail, but not delete mail for good or change your Gmail settings.Step 4: Wait for the first sync
Uplevel brings in the last 90 days of email with your contacts. The Inbox says it's syncing while that runs, which usually takes a few minutes. After that, new mail arrives within a few minutes of landing in Gmail.
Step 5: Set the details
Open the account on the Google card to:
- Turn Mail, Calendar or Tasks on or off for that account.
- Make it your Send from by default account when you connect more than one.
- Add domains or addresses to Never log domains or addresses, such as your doctor or your bank. Mail with them is never synced, even when they are a contact.
What happens next
Email with a contact shows on their timeline and in your Inbox, next to texts and missed calls. Reply, forward or archive from Uplevel; archiving in Uplevel archives the thread in Gmail too.
When you email someone who isn't a contact yet, Uplevel adds them as a private contact, so their reply has somewhere to land. To connect a second address, choose Connect another account on the Google card.
If something’s off
- An email isn’t in the Inbox.
- Uplevel only keeps mail with your contacts. Add the sender as a contact, and new mail with them comes in. Also check that the address isn’t on your never-log list.
- The account says Needs reconnection.
- Google stopped accepting the connection, usually after a password change or a revoked permission. Choose Reconnect on the account and approve again.
- The Connect Google account button is missing.
- The Google integration is off for the workspace. An owner or admin turns it on with the switch on the Google card.
Ask Jan to do it
Jan is the assistant built into Uplevel. Type any of these into Ask Jan in your dashboard. Connecting an account goes through Google’s own consent screen, so Jan can open the page but can’t approve it for you.
- “Take me to where I connect Gmail.”
- Jan opens Settings → Integrations. You approve the connection at Google yourself.
- “Keep email from my synced Gmail private.”
- Jan shows a card to confirm, then turns sharing off for your mailbox, so teammates see only that an exchange happened.
