Video walkthrough
The video for this guide isn’t recorded yet. Every step it will show is written out below.

- 2. Buying a number
- 3. Calls, texts or both
- 4. Porting your number in
- 5. Port day
What it’s for
An Uplevel number lets you call from your browser, text clients and run a Team Inbox from one line, with every call and text landing on the contact's timeline.
You can buy a new number in a few minutes, or bring in the number your clients already have. Calls work as soon as the number is yours. Texting also needs carrier registration, which takes longer, so start it the same day.
Before you start
- Owner or admin access to the workspace.
- A payment method on file. A number can’t be bought or ported in without one. Pricing has what numbers and calling cost.
- To port a number in: a recent bill from your current carrier, and the account’s port-out PIN if it has one.
Steps
Step 1: Search for a number
Go to Settings → Calls & SMS. On the Numbers tab, choose Assign number.
On Search & buy, search by Area code, City or State, or by digits the Number contains, and choose Search. Each result shows whether it can take calls, texts and picture messages. Choose Select on the one you want.
Reuse existing lists numbers deleted from the workspace in the last 28 days, so you can restore one instead of buying another.
Step 2: Choose what the number is for
Under Use this number for, tick Calls, Text messages or both.
Texting from a US business number needs a registered brand and an approved campaign with the carriers. If you already have an approved campaign, choose it. If not, choose Start Brand registration: the number is bought now and you continue to the carrier registration form.
Choose Buy number. The number is ready for calls straight away, as long as Enable calls is on at the top of the page. It can send texts once the brand, the campaign and the number’s carrier assignment are all approved.
Step 3: Check the number can port
To keep the number your clients already know, choose Port a number under Bring your own number on the Numbers tab.
Enter each number that's moving. Numbers on the same carrier bill can move together in one request. Choose Check eligibility. Checking is free and changes nothing at your current provider.
Choose a purpose for each number that can port, then Create port request. This creates a draft. Nothing is sent to your carrier yet.
Step 4: Fill in your carrier details
The request asks for four things:
- Your current carrier account: the account name exactly as it appears on the bill, the authorized person, the account number, the Port-out PIN (ask your carrier; it's usually not your voicemail PIN), the billing phone number and the service address.
- Paperwork: a recent bill, and a signed Letter of authorization if your carrier asks for one. Uplevel generates the letter from your details for you to download, sign and attach.
- Preferred port date, if you have one. The carriers confirm the final date.
- Review & submit, then Submit port request.
Step 5: Keep your old service until port day
The request page shows its progress and history. Most US ports get a confirmed date within a few business days. If your carrier rejects the details, the page says what to correct, and you resubmit without losing your place.
Keep your current phone service active until the port completes. Canceling it early is the most common way ports fail. Calls keep working at your current provider during the port, and the switch takes minutes on the day.
You can cancel a request up to 48 hours before the confirmed date.
What happens next
The number appears on the Numbers tab with what it can do right now. Open it to decide who it rings and when; Set up call routing covers that.
Until texting is registered, the number shows why it can't text yet. The Brands tab under Calls & SMS tracks the carrier review.
If something’s off
- The search finds no numbers.
- Try a nearby area code, or search by state only. Some area codes have few numbers left.
- A number says it can’t be ported.
- Check the digits first. If they’re right, the number can’t move automatically, and your current carrier can tell you why.
- The port was rejected.
- The account name, account number or PIN didn’t match the carrier’s records. Copy them from a recent bill exactly, including words like “LLC”, then resubmit.
- My number can call but not text.
- Texting waits for the carrier to approve your brand and campaign, and for the number’s assignment to the campaign. The Numbers tab shows which of those is still pending.
Ask Jan to do it
Jan is the assistant built into Uplevel. Type any of these into Ask Jan in your dashboard. Jan can’t buy a number or submit a port request, because both charge your payment method. It opens Settings → Calls & SMS so you can.
- “Can (206) 555-0142 be ported to Uplevel?”
- Jan checks with the carriers whether the number can move, whether it can move the same day, and whether it can text after the port.
- “Where is my port request?”
- Jan reads your port requests and tells you each one’s status and what it still needs.
- “Why can’t my number send texts yet?”
- Jan reads your texting registration and says which step is waiting: the brand, the campaign or the number’s assignment.
